Brantôme, Dordogne

Brantome is an idyllic village located on the banks of the River Dronne. The town is known locally as the Venice of the Perigord - wooded cliffs loom up behind the beautiful Benedictine abbey, and the river Dronne runs through the village in front of a Benedictine Abbey. There is a small weir and a lovely unusual right-angled stone bridge to add to the beauty of the scene.

The Benedictine Abbey was founded by Charlemagne in the 8th century. The original abbey was destroyed by Vikings and then rebuilt in the tenth century and again in the twelfth and fifteenth centuries.

Although closed for the season, we were able to visit the original troglodyte dwellings used by the monks, and saw a cave with a remarkable sculpture of ‘The Last Judgement’ and see the rooms used by the monks with beds and shelves carved out of the stone.

We enjoyed a lovely lunch in a riverside café and basked in the warm sun, the first we had seen in a while.
