MUNICH

We spend only one day in Munich, although manage to see the Residenz (Palace) that once housed Bavarian rulers from 1385 to 1918 . The rooms are ornate and in the Rococo and Neo-Classical styles, gilt is everywhere, mirrors, doors and ceilings. It is extensive with 100 rooms filled with priceless antiques, porcelain, paintings, tapestries and sculptures. You where not allowed to take flash photos, so sorry much that we saw there I can't show you. Priceless black and red marble used for stairs, fireplaces, floors and door frames had Brian drooling. We have our morning coffee in the Marienplatz, and watch the Glockenspiel do it’s 5 minute routine, duelling knights on horses, with the Austrian knight being knocked from his horse by of course, the German knight, then dancing figures twirl for another 2 minutes or so. I tried to record the whole show, but my arm got tired trying to hold the camera still for that long. The Munich Beer Fest had just finished but we were lucky enough to be there for the “Dult”, a traditional folkloric fair that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Stalls selling everything from beer and Bratwurst, and antiques to some lovely German traditional dresses and Lederhosen, that Brian took a particular and peculiar interest in. Maybe he’s thinking ahead for a new wardrobe for our time in Austria, that’s just a little further down the road.
